About Word & Trivia

Scrabble and Boggle

Scrabble got its name in 1948 and still hands every player seven tiles and a rack. The classic set has 100 letter tiles and a board full of premium squares, and the Deluxe Edition adds a rotating board with a raised grid that holds tiles in place. Scrabble Junior gives early readers a 2-sided board that grows with them. Boggle is the fast one: shake 16 letter cubes, flip the timer, find words.

Trivial Pursuit, six wedges at a time

Trivial Pursuit has been settling arguments since 1981. The goal is the same in every box: answer questions in six categories and fill your pie with wedges. The Classic and Master editions are written for adults and older teens, the Family Edition has separate cards for kids and grown-ups, and the newest edition adds co-op and team options. Mini packs and the compact Harry Potter edition are easy to take along.

Words under pressure

Some word games are really party games. In Taboo you get your team to say a word without using the five most obvious clues. Scattergories gives you a letter, a list of categories and a timer. Catch Phrase is a handheld you pass around before the buzzer goes off. All three play in teams or big groups, which is why they come down from the closet when guests arrive. Taboo Uncensored is for adults only.

Asked about Word & Trivia

Which Trivial Pursuit is best for families?

The Family Edition, because it has separate question cards for kids and adults so everyone has a fair shot at a wedge.

Is Scrabble Junior the same game as Scrabble?

It is a simpler version for young readers. One side of the board has kids match letters to printed words, and the other side lets them build their own.

How many players does Taboo need?

Taboo is a team game for 4 or more players, and it works well with large groups split into two teams.
